Vera Menchik (1906-44) was the first women’s world chess champion, gaining the title at 21 and successfully defending it many times until her untimely death. She remains the longest reigning champion. Born in Russia to a Czech father and English mother, Vera Menchik moved to England at the age of 15, where she became the strongest female player of the era, whilst representing her
adopted country. She lived at Hastings and then London. This year marks the 81th anniversary of her death, a casualty of the Second World War. A German V1 rocket exploded in her street in Clapham, south London, killing her, her mother, her sister, and eight other residents.
